Berlin. Thorben Pfotenhauer from PSV Eisenach recorded a respectable success at the international tournament.
Almost 400 judoka from four continents and 25 nations took to the mats at the European Youth Judo Cup under 18 in Berlin. The six-man Thuringian squad included Sebastian Vogel from PSV Eisenach (up to 60 kilograms) and Thorben Pfotenhauer (up to 73 kg). While Vogel was eliminated in the first round, Pfotenhauer easily beat Francesco Schüssler from Bavaria in his first fight, but then lost in the extended fight against the eventual silver medalist Artem Neyolov from Canada.
The student athlete ended up in the consolation round pool. Here Thorben Pfotenhauer first won early against Melvin Nowak from Berlin with a remarkable shoulder throw. He then faced his Thuringian training mate Henry Röder (VC Jena). Here Pfotenhauer had the upper hand with a medium rating and then also knocked Bayern’s Valentin Sommer out of the race with the same result. In the fight for the bronze medal, Pfotenhauer had to admit defeat to Yoshia Laleike from North Rhine-Westphalia in a hold and had to settle for a thankless fifth place. Nevertheless, national coach Jan Steiner praised “his courageous fighting style” and was very satisfied with his “extremely positive performance development”.
In the subsequent training camp, the TJV athletes were able to compete with the best European fighters in four strenuous training sessions.
