Enríquez Negreira trips upon arrival for his forensic examination in Barcelona

This morning, José María Enríquez Negreira appeared at the Institute of Legal Medicine of Catalonia, in Barcelona, to undergo a medical and psychological evaluation by forensics. The purpose of this review is to determine if he is fit to appear in the trial for the ‘Negreria Case’. However, before entering the premises, he suffered a fall, although he managed to get up without apparent complications.

This former arbitrator had alleged an onset of Alzheimer’s as a justification for not giving evidence once the investigation is concluded and a trial date is set. Now, forensic experts have the responsibility of evaluating whether the degree of Alzheimer’s he suffers makes him incapable of giving testimony in the future judicial process.

The investigation focuses on the payments made by FC Barcelona to Enríquez Negreira, which amounted to around 7.3 million euros for various services and reports allegedly provided by him and his son Javier, through several companies. The Catalan club, along with some of its former directors, is under scrutiny for alleged crimes related to sports corruption and bribery. Judge Joaquín Aguirre, in charge of the case in the Court of Instruction number 1 of Barcelona, has added the accusation of bribery when considering Enríquez Negreira as a public official in this context.

In his defense, Enríquez Negreira initially argued the presence of “mild dementia.” However, today’s review by coroners will determine whether his alleged cognitive impairment has an impact on his ability to face criminal proceedings and give evidence.
