The Katán club works mainly in Tres Cantos but also carries out its activity in other locations, teaching in schools in Leganés, Aravaca, San Sebastián de los Reyes, Piedralaves or Sotillo de la Adrada. There they teach judo and jiu-jitsu lessons, two contact sports that have similarities, but also many differences.

Judo y jiu-jitsu

As Merino explains, judo is based on the grip and takedown of the opponent and his subsequent submission on the ground, jiu-jitsu for its part is a discipline prior to judo – in fact the founder of judo was an avid practitioner of jiu-jitsu – and presents up to 4 types of competition, two focused on direct combat; the first focused on standing fighting with kicks and punches without harshness (more similar to the karate style) and another focused on fighting on the ground (similar to judo); The other two modalities are focused on technique and involve teamwork. These are the duo and show modalities, in the first, a series of movements chosen by the referee are reproduced in pairs and a score is achieved based on the execution, in the second, as its name indicates, a kind of show is built in which through a story a choreography is represented, scoring both the technique and the artistic representation.

Risk level in contact sports

When asked about the level of risk of both modalities, Merino is clear, she understands that the practice of judo or jiu-jitsu can be dangerous depending on the level, but she assures that there is no greater risk of suffering an injury practicing. contact sports than practicing paddle tennis or soccer.
