FC Bayern’s Leon Goretzka to Miss Several Weeks Due to Injury Ahead of Champions League Match against Galatasaray

Bad news for FC Bayern: Shortly before the Champions League duel with Galatasaray in Istanbul, Leon Goretzka also has to miss several weeks.

Reported from Mainz Stefan Kumberger

The personnel shortage at FC Bayern is getting worse and worse:

Leon Goretzka (one goal, one assist) had to pay dearly for the win at FSV Mainz 05 (3:1).

The 28-year-old injured his left hand after a duel with Ludovic Ajorque.

Although he was able to continue playing after lengthy treatment, Goretzka had to leave the field nine minutes later.

As FC Bayern announced on Sunday afternoon, the national player suffered a metacarpal fracture.

This means that Goretzka, who has already undergone surgery, will be missing “in the next games”. The compulsory break will probably last around three weeks.

Thomas Tuchel is once again faced with a major personnel problem.

The Bayern coach currently has to do without numerous stars – at the same time, the players who are able to play are not in the best physical shape.

“We don’t have many options,” he explained after the game. “So we hope that Leon’s hand injury isn’t that bad.”

But things got worse.

the essentials in brief

In addition to Goretzka, the injured Dayot Upamecano and Noussair Mazraoui as well as Serge Gnabry (broken forearm), Raphael Guerrerio (torn muscle fiber) and youngster Tarek Buchmann (torn muscle bundle) are also missing.

“We’re coming back from the international break. We have players who come from Korea or America. They’re all here with jet lag or had injuries. Matthijs [de Ligt] Coming in after an injury, Josh [Kimmich] has to play here after a flu. That cost us a lot,” said Tuchel after the game ran.

Sarr is the only fit right-back

The problems in defense and in midfield are correspondingly big. Currently there are only two central defenders available, without Goretzka in Kimmich and Konrad Laimer only two defensive midfielders and no trained right-back apart from the permanent reserve Bouna Sarr.

For Mazraoui, who was missing in Mainz due to muscular problems, the “tendency is rather no, but there is still hope,” said Tuchel.

That’s precisely why he rates the victory in Mainz “extremely highly”. He also put his expectations of the team into perspective.

Tuchel allows his stars to have one or two weaknesses due to the situation, but from a purely sporting perspective, FC Bayern cannot afford to let up.

They haven’t yet reached the top spot in the Bundesliga, but Galatasaray has a big challenge waiting for them in the Champions League. Especially since the Turkish fans are another factor that speaks against the Munich team.

FC Bayern wins in Mainz: The grades
FC Bayern Munich reacts to the victories of their direct competition and stays close to the top of the table thanks to the 3:1 (2:1) in Mainz. ran has the grades of the Bayern players.© 2023 Getty Images

Sven Ulreich
Showed his class in Lee’s header in the 13th minute and steered the ball onto the post. Otherwise a really good support – especially in the strong phases of the 05ers. ran-Note: 2© Beautiful Sports

Konrad Laimer
Snappy and strong in duels. Offensive with too few accents. Runs in completely the wrong direction when he concedes the first goal. Feels a little more comfortable in the midfield center again after Goretzka’s substitution. ran-Note: 3© Beautiful Sports

Matthijs de Ligt
Just like Kim, he doesn’t always seem comfortable, especially in the first phase of pressure in Mainz. It catches on as the game progresses, but it becomes clear that it is not well-rehearsed. ran-Note: 2© eu-images

Kim Min-jae
Leaves the opening of the game largely to de Ligt and Kimmich. Sometimes he covers his opponents “on sight” and therefore offers unnecessary space. When Mainz had a big chance in the 57th minute, he wandered somewhere in the midfield and was unable to sufficiently disrupt his opponent when the home team hit the post shortly before the end. ran-Note: 5© MIS

Alphonso Davies
Always looks for a way into the depths, but is too timid on defense. Lacks accuracy offensively. Once again not a real factor in Bayern’s game. ran-Note: 4© Beautiful Sports

Joshua Kimmich
Sets the first Munich exclamation mark with his long-range shot in the 8th minute. Directs his people well, but can only achieve little, especially on the offensive. The exception was his harmless shot in the 53rd minute. ran-Note: 3© Eibner

Leon Goretzka
Heads a difficult ball to Kane, who makes it 2-0. Can play as an eighth, but has already filled the role better. Nevertheless, they managed to score the important third goal in a period of pressure from Mainz. Is substituted in the 74th minute. ran-Note: 2© Passion2Press

Kingsley Coman
He did a real job with his goal to make it 1-0. Then the old pattern again: too weak in the finish. With his good duel leadership, he scored the first goal for Mainz. Lots of light, lots of shadows. ran-Note: 3© Chai v Laage

Jamal Musiala
Once again an asset for Bayern. But it gets lost too often in the “little and small”, especially in the last third. Could have acted much more dangerously, but he made it 3-1. ran-Note: 3© MIS

Leroy Sane
Underlines his strong performances in recent weeks, but this time he doesn’t have the dominance and sophistication as before the international break. Seems unusually hectic. ran-Note: 3© 2023 Getty Images

Harry Kane
Several Mainz players were on their feet in the first 15 minutes, but still remained ice cold when they scored to make it 2-0. As a result, Rackert is not above any duel. But he often finds no buyers for his passports and is left alone. ran-Note: 2© Eibner

Bouna Sarr
Basically, he’s so much left out at FC Bayern that every substitution is worth news. Comes on for Goretzka in the 74th minute. But remains without influence. ran-Grade: no rating© Beautiful Sports

Tuchel: “There is no room for fear”

“We’re not afraid at all. It’s still football, there’s no room for fear. Now we have to regenerate as best we can,” continued Tuchel.

This is also why the coach changed his preparation for the premier class compared to the away game in Copenhagen. FC Bayern will not train in the Turkish metropolis, but on Säbener Straße.

Tuchel and his team fear the long flight time, the time difference, the long distances in Istanbul – and the traffic. From the 50-year-old’s point of view, the situation is “too unpredictable”.

FC Bayern’s line-up is now easy to calculate due to the injury misery.

In Istanbul, the team is now almost on its own after Goretzka’s loss.
