Frans Krätzig: Benefitting from Thin Defensive Options at Bayern Munich

Thomas Tuchel currently doesn’t have many options in defense. That’s not a disadvantage for every Bayern professional.

Maybe a few FC Bayern fans will be interested in the international match between South Korea and Tunisia on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. After all, it can be assumed that Min-Jae Kim will play in defense for coach Jürgen Klinsmann’s team. And nothing should happen to this Kim, both in this and the next international match against Vietnam.

At home in Munich the problems have been piling up recently, especially in the defensive center. Although Matthijs de Ligt (for one half), Dayot Upamecano and Kim did not allow the opponent a single chance to score in the last two home games against Bochum (7:0) and Freiburg (3:0), the current status is only that of this trio Kim is still healthy and no other central defender is available.

Hoeneß reacts to Tuchel

“If you see what we have on the bench every weekend – only national players – then we don’t have a thin squad,” confirmed supervisory board member Uli Hoeneß in an interview with “RTL/ntv” on Thursday, reacting belatedly to Thomas’ statement Tuchel, who criticized the record champions’ “thin squad” after the botched deadline day. And can currently see this confirmed.

Of course, he can choose between Jamal Musiala and Thomas Müller on the offensive, between Kingsley Coman or Mathys Tel. And Serge Gnabry will also return shortly after his broken forearm; the national player is already completing his first running sessions again.

When it comes to defense, the shoe puts a lot of pressure

In defense, however, there is a lot of pressure, as was shown not least in the cup game in Münster (3-0), when all three central defenders were missing, as was young hope Tarek Buchmann. The homegrown player is in rehab training after a torn muscle bundle, as is de Ligt, who was in individual training with fitness coach Prof. Dr. on Thursday. Holger Broich took the ball again.

Meanwhile, Hoeneß assures us that there will be no “transfer offensive” in the winter; instead, home-grown players will continue to have a chance. Like Frans Krätzig, who took advantage of the summer preparation, signed a professional contract and recently played several games. The 20-year-old left-back, who was also used in the offensive in Münster, “would never have been used” if several players had been signed, as Hoeneß believes. “And his career at FC Bayern probably wouldn’t have happened at all.”

Krätzig is now benefiting from the thin staffing level and can expect further appearances with the professionals. Meanwhile, De Ligt still has nine days until the away game in Mainz to overcome the pain in his knee and regain match fitness.
