After Paris 2020, Ugo Humbert is in a Masters quarter-final for the second time.

Before today’s encounter on the tour, Ugo Humbert and JJWolf had only met once in qualifying for the Masters event in Indian Wells 2019. At that time, the Frenchman was able to prevail in two close sets.

This time there was no sign of a balanced game right from the start. Humbert took a quick 3-0 lead and only let his 24-year-old opponent score in the fourth game of the first round. In the second set, Wolf was able to start with a held serve game, but then had to allow Humbert, who was a year older, to win five games in a row. Without allowing a single break chance, the current world No. 34 served without losing a point to win 6-1, 6-1 after 57 minutes.

In the on-court interview, the satisfied winner commented: “It was a very strong performance from me in which I was completely focused from the start. Of course, I’m very proud of having played at such a high level throughout today.” When asked about the reasons for his rise in the last few weeks, he added: “Last year I mostly had to play Challenger tournaments, but I had to put in the hard work every day My team around Jeremy Chardy is paying off and we need to build on that.”

In his second quarterfinal at Masters level, the left-hander faces either Andrey Rublev or the American Tommy Paul. With his success, Humbert rises to number 29 in the live ranking and is only four places away from his career high.
