Giannis Antetokounmpo Commits to Milwaukee Bucks with Million-Dollar Contract Extension

The million-dollar contract extension ensures the Bucks that the Greek star and two-time NBA MVP award winner will not hit free agency in 2025.

Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo has reached an agreement to extend his contract for three years and $186 million, his agent Alex Saratsis informed ESPN.

The deal, which includes a player option for the 2027-28 season, commits Antetokounmpo to the franchise for the duration of guard Damian Lillard’s contract and ends the possibility of him entering free agency in 2025.

The extension, which was first announced on social media by the two-time NBA MVP, marks another commitment from Giannis to the franchise that recruited him out of Greece in 2013 as the 15th overall pick in the draft and developed him as one of the most dominant forces in NBA history.

Bucks general manager Jon Horst traveled to Chicago on Sunday to meet with Saratsis and finalize details of an extension that could maximize Giannis Antetokounmpo’s earnings over his career. The Greek had until 11:59 pm ET on Monday to sign the extension.

Per the Over-38 rule in the collective bargaining agreement, Antetokounmpo can sign a short-term deal again with the Bucks in 2026 and another four-year extension in 2028.

Antetokounmpo has established himself as one of the best players in NBA history with a resume that includes the 2021 championship, the Finals Most Valuable Player award and two league MVP awards.

A season ago, Gianis averaged a career-high 31.1 points per game and is one of only three players in NBA history to win season MVP, Finals MVP and Defensive Player of the Year awards. according to ESPN Stats & Information. The others are Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon.

The Bucks host the visit of the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday in their first game of the 2023-24 NBA regular season.
