India Makes History with Over 100 Medals at the 2023 Asian Games

India hit a ton! A historic first at the 2023 Asian Games. The Indian contingent is now assured of crossing the 100 medal mark during this great continental spectacle. This is the first time that India has crossed the three-digit mark in the medal tally at the Asian Games. India has already won 95 medals and seven more medals are sure to cross the historic mark of 100. India is expected to win more medals in compound archery (3), kabaddi (2), badminton (1) and in men’s cricket (1). This is also the first time in the history of the Asian Games that more than 20 gold medals have been won. India has also won a record 22 gold medals so far, surpassing its previous record at the continental event. India has shone in disciplines like shooting and athletics.

These 19th Asian Games were also historic for India in many other ways. This was the first time that the Indian men’s and women’s cricket teams participated in the continental event.

While the women’s team clinched a gold medal, the men’s team is set to face Afghanistan in the final on Saturday with a silver medal already assured for the nation.

Athletics had the biggest impact on India’s tally this edition. The discipline has earned India a total of 29 medals, including 6 gold, 14 silver and 9 bronze.

Shooting is another discipline that has helped India win 22 medals; 7 gold, 9 silver and 6 bronze.

In equestrian, India won a gold medal after 42 years, whether in individual or team events.

Games like sailing and rowing also greatly helped India’s cause.

Meanwhile, in the men’s badminton team event too, India won a historic silver medal. The team lost to China in a hard-fought final.

More Indian athletes will be in action on October 7. This gives India a strong chance of further improving their medal record. The closing ceremony of the Asian Games will take place on October 8 (Sunday).
