Is the end of an era approaching for the New England Patriots?

New England coach Bill Belichick indicated this Wednesday that Mac Jones will continue as a starter for the Patriots’ confrontation against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Mac Jones is in the midst of his worst season since becoming the 15th overall pick in the 2021 draft. He completed 12 of 22 passes for 110 yards and two interceptions in a 34-0 loss to the New Orleans Saints last week. . His passer rating is 30.5, the second-worst mark of his career.
He has six turnovers in the last two weeks, one of the biggest impediments for an offense that has only managed three points in that period. The Patriots (1-4) have not scored a touchdown in 10 quarters.
These results led to a promise from Belichick that this week’s preparations to face the Raiders would be a reset of sorts, focused on fundamentals, including everything from pre-snap penalties to consistency in the running game and air, as well as improve coverage.
For Mac Jones, this means recommitting to something that can’t be quantified: having fun.
It was something Mac Jones emphasized during training camp and lost in this poor start with the Patriots.
“They saw it in training camp, we were having fun. Then the games came, I don’t know what it was,” he admitted. “We want to go out and have fun and do our jobs and celebrate each other.”
Increasing fun does two things, Mac Jones said. It helps you relax and be a freer communicator.
After his mistakes on bad offensive series in the two most recent losses, Mac Jones has gone to sit quietly on the bench without interacting with his teammates. That must change, he said, if the team wants to get out of this point.
Things have been so bad that offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien believes they still have time to fix things.
“There’s still a lot of season left,” O’Brien said last week. “Obituaries are always being written, but there is a lot of football to be played.”
