Iserlohn Kangaroos Defeat Rostock Seawolves Academy in a Balanced Match

The Iserlohn Kangaroos defeated the Rostock Seawolves Academy 91:81. On the second match day of the BARMER 2nd Basketball Bundesliga ProB North, the spectators in the Matthias-Grothe-Halle saw a largely balanced game, which the Waldstadt team decided in their favor with a unified team performance in the second half.

After the unfortunate defeat on Saturday, the people of Iserlohn were desperate for their first win of the season, but the guests from Rostock held up well from the start. The second representative of BBL club Rostock Seawolves was able to win on the first match day and also performed without fear at Hemberg. Led by their two top scorers Maughmer and Nickel, they repeatedly posed problems for the Kangaroos defense and converted some difficult shots.

The Kangaroos, on the other hand, had learned a clear lesson from the first game: attack the basket more aggressively and not rely too much on shooting from distance. In the first half, however, this was only partially successful; a well-organized defense by the guests forced the Iserlohn team to make a lot of long-range throws, which meant that the game went into the half-time break with a score of 39:40.

In the second half, the Waldstädters appeared more determined and found their way into the opponent’s zone more often. Samuel Mpacko, in particular, should be mentioned here, who played a very strong game and was the guarantee for the turnaround with his energetic drives to the basket. The ball ran faster and the Iserlohn team posed problems for the Rostock defense. The guests were either forced to foul or the Kangaroos found the open shooter with quick passes. They also tightened the screws in defense, Mpacko and Henson in particular were able to slow down the strong Maughmer more and more with intensive defense. After the Iserlohn team was able to gain a lead, two important three-pointers from Groh and Marei ensured the decision in the Matthias-Grothe-Halle.

Led by top scorer Samuel Mpacko, five Iserlohn players scored in double figures: Henson, Ziring, Konradt and Groh. Center talent Malick Kordel also made his second division debut and showed a good performance in just under 6 minutes with 4 points, a block and a steal. So it was a positive Tuesday evening for the people of Waldstadt, no matter what
Head coach Dennis Shirvan sees it this way:

“A difficult game today, Rostock did well and we failed to show the necessary aggressiveness at the beginning. In the second half we simply defended better. Maughmer converted some difficult shots, but we took him out of the game in crunch time. Offensively, we let the ball run well and converted the open throws. Samuel Mpacko did it strongly and attacked the zone again and again. A tough game and an important win, we’re going to Itzehoe on Saturday, we want to improve on that!”

Iserlohn Kangaroos: Viktor Ziring (11/3), Elias Marei (4/7 rebounds), Jonathan Almstedt (2), Samuel Mpacko (21/1), Johannes Konradt (10/2), Ivan Delgado (3/1) Travis Henson (17/1), Mathias Groh (16/4), Ruben Dahmen (3/1), Malick Kordel (4), Julius Treichel (DNP).
