Feyenoord football supporters are not welcome at the Champions League match against Lazio on Tuesday, November 7 in Rome. This was decided by the Italian Ministry of the Interior.

The Roman authorities have been banning Feyenoord fans since the disturbances during a European match between Feyenoord and AS Roma in 2015. During those riots, the four-century-old Barcaccia fountain near the famous Spanish Steps was damaged.

Last season, no Rotterdam fans were welcome in Rome at the Europa League quarter-final match between AS Roma and Feyenoord. The Romans then had strict access controls at the entrance to the stadium; Feyenoord fans with a ticket for a home section were not allowed into the stadium.

Feyenoord’s first away match in the Champions League, last week in Spain against Atlético Madrid, went without major disturbances. Thousands of fans made the trip to the Spanish capital. The local police only reported an incident in the VIP section of the stadium, resulting in six arrests.

The European football association UEFA has yet to respond to the Italian government’s decision. Feyenoord first plays at home against Lazio on Wednesday, October 25. It is not yet known whether Italian fans are welcome in Rotterdam, Rijnmond reports.
