Ranked 4th in the world rankings, Jannik Sinner has never been this high in his career. On Wednesday he impressively showed that the tennis world is currently seeing the best version of the South Tyrolean. He won the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing in impressive fashion.

Since the outstanding victory over the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz (ATP 2), it has been clear that Jannik Sinner will be number 4 in the tennis world from next Monday. To date (and since the introduction of the electronic ATP rankings) only one other tennis player from Italy has achieved this, namely the legendary Adriano Panatta. He congratulated Sinner on this new record before the final against Daniil Medvedev.

Now Sinner also put the crown on his head. He won the final – against his feared opponent. He competed against the Russian Daniil Medvedev six times and left the field as a loser six times. In the seventh attempt it finally worked: the South Tyrolean won the final 7:6 (2), 7:6 (2). This was Sinner’s ninth tournament victory on the ATP tour, the third this year after Montpellier and Toronto. And all of this at just 22 years old.

A stormy week, a great triumph

Sinner has thus gilded a turbulent week of tennis. In the quarterfinals, the youngster from Pustertal had to throw up against Grigor Dimitrov, but somehow won the match. In the semifinals he defeated world number 2 – Carlos Alcaraz – with a simply outstanding performance. And now the triumph against the number 3 in the world. Sinner also showed a strong reaction to the criticism of the last few weeks. Because of the Davis Cup cancellation, the Sexten native was spurned for days in the Gazzetta dello Sport – Italy’s largest sports newspaper. With top sporting performances, he kept the critics quiet.

To the game. The first set started as you would expect from two world-class athletes. Sinner and Medvedev did their job with concentration and calmness. The Russian made a few mistakes at the very beginning, but these were of no consequence and were history by the third game at the latest. Medvedev impressed with his strong service (87 percent of the first serves went into the field in the first set), but was hardly able to go on the offensive in Sinner’s service games. The result: it went back and forth. With the score at 4:3, Sinner, who played a fairly offensive style, was able to get two break points, but missed them (too) carelessly. Ultimately, the first set was decided in a tiebreak and Sinner had the better end with 7:2 – 1:0 for the South Tyrolean.

Tie break again, Sinner again

A similar picture emerged in the second sentence. Sinner and Medvedev showed hardly any weaknesses in their serves, with one exception: the South Tyrolean had three break chances in the third game, but was unable to convert them. So it went back to the tie break, and here, as in the first set, Sinner presented himself with extremely strong nerves. The Pusterer immediately secured a mini-break, moved ahead 3-0, played flawlessly on his own serve and only awarded Medvedev a total of two points. Absolute highlight: The Sesto player’s incredible cross shot, with which he earned the match point and finally converted it. Medvedev despaired, Sinner cheered. The tournament victory was secured after 2.03 hours.
