Not only would it have been the icing on the cake for an outstanding Hoffenheim combination, but it could also have ended one of the longest dry spells in the league. Because no player in the Bundesliga is currently waiting longer for his next goal than Kevin Vogt. It has now been nine years since the defensive specialist last appeared as a goalscorer. Back in October 2014, while still at 1. FC Köln, Vogt had given his team a 1-0 lead in a 2-1 win against Dortmund. Since then there has been radio silence in the opposing penalty area.
Top combination, flop finish
On Saturday evening the spell seemed to be broken. The central defender had energetically dribbled his way forward, passing the ball to Maximilian Beier at the right moment, who passed the ball on to Wout Weghorst, who in turn passed it to Vogt, who was guided by his long-buried goal instinct and took off. The entire Bremen defense was played out when Vogt appeared unchallenged in front of Jiri Pavlenka and had what was probably the decisive 3-1 for TSG – but didn’t score.
Suddenly Vogt’s previously cool approach was replaced by unnecessary hecticness. Far too quickly, too out of place and too unconvinced, Vogt finished and pushed the ball into the arms of his ex-colleague, who suspected the whole thing.
Prömel laughs because of Vogt’s Bremen past
“Kevin Vogt doesn’t appear at the front of the box very often, he can be forgiven for it,” assured Grischa Prömel afterwards, “although he is usually callous in front of the booth during training.” Possibly inappropriate Bremen connection? After all, Vogt played for Werder for half a year on loan. “Maybe I have to talk to him again,” said 2-1 goalscorer Prömel.
Coach Pellegrino Matarazzo also suffered from the stress of missing opportunities to decide the game earlier. “If only we had used one of the three chances to calm the game,” complained Matarazzo. “The biggest chance was Kevin Vogt’s, certainly a 100% chance that can happen.” Rather must.
But it’s not the core competency of the fast and pass-proof defender. Although he has recently established himself more and more as a goalscorer in test matches, taking penalties and regularly converting them safely. Possibly an opportunity could have arisen from the spot because the regular shooter Andrej Kramaric had to pass in Bremen due to a painful bruise. But out of the game, Vogt failed from even closer range – he hasn’t been this close to a Bundesliga goal in ages.
Bundesliga negative value: Vogt has been waiting for 245 games
Vogt has now been waiting for his next goal for 245 games. Longer than any other field player in the upper house. The only player who scored a goal in Bundesliga history and then played at least as many games without a goal in a row was a goalkeeper: Frank Rost. He scored in his 142nd Bundesliga game and then waited 284 more games for another goal; but never met again.
