As the NBA season begins tomorrow, the “Klay Thompson contract extension” file seems very far from being resolved at Golden State according to the latest rumors.
Will Klay Thompson be a free agent next summer? Obviously it’s getting there.
About to enter the final year of his contract with the Warriors, the sniper would be very far from an agreement with his long-time franchise regarding an extension. This is Shams Charania from The Athletic which gives us the latest update, adding that there is a “big gap on the duration and amount” of this potential extension.
The negotiations would thus be “at a standstill” at the time of these lines.

Warriors fans, rest assured, there is a whole season left to find common ground. And then we know that in contractual negotiations, each side has the habit of asking for the moon before gradually moving closer to the other to find an agreement. Classic in short. And the Thompson case is no exception.
However, while the Warriors and Klay seem to want to continue the adventure together, this contract extension will not be a formality as some might have imagined. On the one hand, Golden State is inevitably starting to count its money with the new CBA, which penalizes the most spending franchises much more. On the other hand, Thompson wants to land one last big contract for everything he has brought to this franchise but also his solid production last year (22 points average at 41% at 3-points, 301 winning shots scored, career record). Result: they are not on the same wavelength.
This gives particular importance to the coming season, which could well determine a lot of things in this matter.
