The NFL plans to include Las Vegas in a rotation of regular Super Bowl hosts — even before the booming sports market hosts its first league title game.
With nearly four months before Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium, NFL senior director of events Nicki Ewell said Las Vegas is elevating itself to a status enjoyed by other multiple Super Bowl host cities such as New Orleans, Miami, and Phoenix.
“We have amazing Super Bowl cities that go into rotation. Las Vegas will certainly be one of them as well,” Ewell said. “We know this is an amazing Super Bowl city even without hosting. All 32 [teams’ fans] converge on this city.
“We love the sea of [Raiders] Silver and Black jerseys that come to Allegiant Stadium, absolutely. But we know when that schedule release comes out, our fans of the 31 clubs are looking at, ‘When is my club coming to Allegiant?’ We know that this is a very special place to be.”
Ewell’s comments are the latest indicator of Las Vegas’ meteoric transformation into a major sports town.
The city’s portfolio includes next month’s Formula 1 race, championship NHL and WNBA teams, a forthcoming MLB franchise, planned Final Fours, and a planned $10 billion entertainment complex to house an anticipated NBA expansion franchise. The Sphere, the city’s newest venue, has become a coveted spot for sports entities.
“Simply put, it will be the biggest event in the history of Las Vegas,” said Sean McBurney, Caesars Entertainment regional president of Super Bowl LVIII. “When you actually get the game here, what we’re seeing is demand that is off the charts — it’s demand that we’ve never seen before.”
The growing stature of Las Vegas as a Super Bowl site also closely follows the league’s indication that London could be in the mix as a future host city.
