LeBron James Returns to Jersey Number 23 for 2023-24 Season as Tribute to Bill Russell

It was a couple of weeks ago that LeBron James announced that he would change the jersey number he will use for the 2023-24 season with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Today at media day, ‘King’ James once again wore the mythical number ’23’ with which he won the championship with the Lakers in 2020 in the ‘bubble’ season.

James will leave behind the number ‘6’ that he used in the last two campaigns and will once again use his previous number as a sign of respect to Bill Russell, whose number 6 was retired by the NBA in August 2022; this after a tribute to his long career as one of the best players of all time.

The NBA explained at the time that players who were already wearing the number 6 at the time of Russell’s death were not required to change it, but it could no longer be taken as the primary option by another player.
