Lionel Messi won the 2023 Ballon d’Or, the most important individual award in professional football, awarded by the French sports magazine France Football to the best player of the past season. For Messi it is the eighth Ballon d’Or in his career, three more than the other most awarded player (Cristiano Ronaldo, absent from the candidates this year). He had already held the record for absolute victories since 2019, but with the latter he became the first to win it without playing in Europe: in fact, since July he has been playing in the United States with Inter Miami.

The votes that awarded the Ballon d’Or were cast by one hundred international journalists. The World Cup he won as captain with Argentina last December played a major role in Messi’s victory. The World Cup was the only trophy Messi was missing and at the end of the final he was awarded the best player of the tournament. His season with Paris Saint-Germain, however, was rather disappointing, as was the previous one.
In the list of the most voted players, Messi preceded Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappé, Kevin De Buryne, Rodri, Vinicius Junior, Julian Alvarez, Victor Osimhen, Bernardo Silva and Luka Modric. The best and only Italian in the top thirty list was Nicolò Barella, twenty-seventh.
