Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games Propose Five Additional Sports to Olympic Program

The Organizing Committee for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games has proposed five additional sports to the Olympic program: baseball-softball, cricket, flag football (a version of American football where contact is limited), lacrosse and squash. The International Olympic Committee announced it on Monday.

The proposal will now be submitted to the IOC Olympic Program Commission, which will review it and issue a recommendation to the Executive Board. If the proposal is accepted, it will be presented at the 141st IOC Session in Mumbai (October 15-17), the IOC explained.

Baseball-softball (from 1992 to 2008 and 2020), cricket (1900) and lacrosse (1904 and 1908) have already appeared on the Olympic program. Flag football and squash would make their first appearance. With sisters Nele (8th) and Tinne Gilis (10th), aged 27 and 25 respectively, Belgium has two players in the world top-10 in squash.

Since the establishment of Olympic Agenda 2020 in 2014, the IOC has allowed organizing committees to propose new sports to the Olympic program as “additional sports”.

The Paris 2024 organizing committee has included surfing, climbing, skateboarding and breaking in its program.
