Manuel Neuer’s Comeback at FC Bayern Approaching: Uncertainty Surrounds National Team Future

Manuel Neuer (37)’s comeback at FC Bayern is getting closer. It should happen on Saturday against Darmstadt. While the world champion returns to the club after a break of almost eleven months due to a broken leg, his future in the national team remains open.

Goalkeeper legend and European champion Toni Schumacher (69/76 international matches) advises Neuer to resign from the DFB. In “The Situation of the League” on BILD TV, Schumacher decides that Marc-André ter Stegen (31) will be number 1 at the home European Championships in 2024.

Schumacher about Neuer: “The topic of the national team would then be over for me. I was number 1 all my life, Manuel Neuer too. And now he should come back and sit on the bench? There’s a lot that goes into it. I don’t know if he’s doing himself any favors.”

For the two-time vice world champion (1982, 86), Neuer’s age also becomes a problem: “I know that at 37 or 38 years old it always takes a little longer for the injuries to heal.”

After national coach Julian Nagelsmann (36) has already released the Bayern goalkeeper from the DFB armband and declared Ilkay Gündogan (32) as European Championship captain, it is clear to Schumacher: “I can’t imagine that much will change in goal . That means: ter Stegen will be number 1. I think he’s doing well, he’ll certainly have his right to remain number 1.”

Sven Ulreich (35), on the other hand, voluntarily concedes the Bayern goal and will probably play his farewell game tomorrow at Galatasaray Istanbul in the Champions League. Ulreich to Sky: “I’ll sit on the bench again and support Manu. My role is clear at FC Bayern. If he’s fit, he’ll play.”

You definitely won’t hear these sentences from ter Stegen…
