NBA Warriors Co-Owner Joe Lacob Addresses Klay Thompson’s Contract Situation

NBA – Warriors co-owner Joe Lacob doesn’t think Klay Thompson’s contract situation will disrupt the team. In any case, he hopes so…

“That’s why I left. Often people say, ‘It’s just business.’ But this is not just a simple economic situation. There will be a statue of this guy outside of Chase Center. He played a key role in our four titles. He is highly regarded within the organization and by fans. It’s not just about the amount and the number of years.”

Even if his first sentence was undoubtedly an exaggeration, Bob Myers summed up the problem posed by the contract extension of Klay Thompson, who will be a free agent at the end of the campaign, rather well.

An essential member of the Golden State dynasty, the “Splash Brother” has understandably been affected by his serious injuries, and even though he helped the team win another title in 2022, he is clearly no longer the same player , both in defense, where he has difficulty keeping up with his opponents, and in attack, where he often seems out of rhythm.

Klay Thompson only has a small 30% shooting success rate (11/37) but 39% 3-point success (7/18) over the four preseason games, with as many assists as turnovers. (6).

Joe Lacob counts on the professionalism of Klay Thompson

For the Warriors, the question is therefore how much to extend Klay Thompson. Should we offer him a contract that only takes into account his current impact? Should we include his “historical” contribution to the club? And most importantly, will this topic float above the team’s season?

“I hope this isn’t a distraction.”replied Joe Lacob, the co-owner of the club. “Finally, we are not in control of the situation. There are two sides in every negotiation. We want him back. He wants to come back. It’s a bit like Draymond

[Green, « free agent » l’été dernier]. I think everyone needs to relax a little. Let things take their course. I think everything will go well. I don’t control the situation. I can’t force the issue. You can not do that. The fans can’t do it. This all has to take its course. There are different parties involved, but the intentions are really good.

He was then told that the extension expected by Draymond Green last year may have been one of the factors which derailed the Warriors’ last campaign…

“Maybe that was the case, but there were problems last year with other guys’ contracts. I know who you are referring to (Jordan Poole). Maybe that’s the case. I don’t think there will be anything like that this year. I really don’t think so. Klay is a professional. I respect him enormously and we will do our best to reach a deal. And I hope it will be done as soon as possible, but it may not be the case” he concludes, well aware that an immediate agreement seems unlikely.
