New Video Footage Released in Vienna Homeless Knife Attacks: Police Urgently Seeking Information

The footage shows a man who was near the crime scene at the time of one of the murders. Anyone who knows him should contact the police immediately.

After three knife attacks on homeless people in Vienna, two of whom died, there are new clues about the possible perpetrator. The police released a search video on Wednesday showing a slim man, 1.85 to 1.92 meters tall, wearing a dark jacket or dark hooded sweater, a dark baseball cap, dark pants and dark shoes carries.

It was recorded by cameras on August 9th this year between 1:19 a.m. and 1:40 a.m. in the Hernalser Belt area in Josefstadt. That night, a 55-year-old became the second victim of three knife attacks on homeless people in Vienna. He was discovered by the occupants of a car who saw a man sitting on the side of the road near Hernalser Belt around two o’clock. Because they drove very slowly to see if he was okay, a police patrol became aware of the car and subsequently the injured man. Although he was still conscious, he was unable to provide any information about what happened. Days later he died in hospital without being interviewed.

The police’s specific questions are: Does anyone know the person seen in the video? Has anyone been told about the attacks on homeless people in general or has anyone heard that a person with relevant knowledge of the perpetrators spoke about it? Did anyone make any suspicious and/or relevant observations at the locations and times of the crime? Any information will be treated as strictly confidential and should be sent to the Vienna State Criminal Police Office on 01 31310 33800 or by email to [email protected]. The Association of Friends of the Vienna Police is offering a sum of 10,000 euros for information that leads to the identification of the perpetrator.

Brigittenau and Venice Au Park

As mentioned, there were a total of three attacks. On July 12th, at 7:40 a.m., a 56-year-old homeless man was found on the Handelskai in Brigittenau – also with stab and cut injuries, from which he died.

Ten days later, on July 22nd, a 51-year-old woman was seriously injured by stab and cut injuries at around 3:40 a.m. in the area of Honiger-Au-Park in Vienna-Leopoldstadt. She survived, but was unable to provide any information about the perpetrator. She simply stated that she was awakened by pain. The woman dragged herself to the Praterstern, where she was found by passers-by who called for help.

Numerous clues, no breakthrough

Despite numerous tips from the public, there was no trace of the perpetrator or perpetrators until the end. It is very likely that it is the same person or people, as the attacks have a similar pattern. All three occurred at night in Vienna, all involved a knife or other stabbing weapon, and the victims were always homeless. “The State Criminal Police Office therefore assumes that it is the same perpetrator,” said Barbara Gass from the Vienna police to the “Presse” weeks ago.

Without finding a perpetrator, it is of course impossible to provide any information about the motive. In addition, it is particularly difficult to find investigative approaches in these three cases. After such attacks, interviews usually take place with the closest family and friends, which is naturally more complicated and takes more time for homeless people. However, the police cannot reveal any details about the investigation.

In any case, the core team of investigators consists of six people from the “Life/Life” department at the Vienna State Criminal Police Office. “All other officials in Vienna are also sensitized and informed in order to show increased attention, especially in those places where homeless people spend the night outdoors,” says Gass. “We are also in constant contact with relevant institutions that look after homeless people, so that they can also inform and warn their clients.” (kb)
