Newcastle United treated the star ensemble of Paris Saint-Germain – including Kylian Mbappé in the starting line-up – to a 4-1 defeat in England in the Champions League. Sven Botman was missing from the home team due to an injury.

The French fell behind in the seventeenth minute after an error in the build-up. Gianluigi Donnarumma made a good save from a bet by former Willem II striker Alexander Isak, but Paraguayan Miguel Almirón still scored on the rebound: 1-0.

Just before half-time, St. James’ Park – Newcastle United’s stadium – exploded again. After a chaotic attack, defender Dan Burn headed towards goal from close range. Donnarumma seemed to make a catty save, but the ball turned out to have gone completely over the line. The VAR checked for offside and an offensive foul, but the goal stood.

PSG tried to force a tying goal after halftime, but within five minutes the ball was in at the other end. Sean Longstaff – like Burn, a Newcastle supporter since childhood – scored through a moderately drastic Donnarumma: 3-0.

A few minutes later, left back Lucas Hernandez made it 3-1 out of nowhere, bordering on offside. It didn’t help much, in injury time the Swiss Fabian Schär even made it 4-1 from a distance.

Malen versus Reijnders

The other match in group F between Borussia Dortmund with Donyell Malen in the starting line-up and AC Milan with Tijjani Reijnders in the starting line-up ended in 0-0.

In group G, Manchester City took the lead in Leipzig just within half an hour through Phil Foden, who left former Heracles Almelo goalkeeper Janis Blaswich without a chance.

City seemed to be in control, but just after halftime they got the equalizer from former Vitesse striker Loïs Openda. The Belgian finished competently via the inside of the post after a sharp counter.

For a moment, the match seemed to have exactly the same outcome as last season, until Argentinian world champion Julián Álvarez scored beautifully from the score to make it 1-2. The Belgian Jérémy Doku made it 1-3 on the counter in injury time.

Red Star Belgrade – in the same group – seems to have to fight it out with Young Boys from Switzerland to see who comes third. In a head-to-head match, the Serbs took a 1-0 lead thanks to Cherif Ndiaye. Immediately after halftime, Filip Ugrinic – a Swiss with Serbian roots – lobbed the 1-1 goal.

Cedric Itten converted a penalty moments later and even gave the Swiss the lead. That seemed to be it until Osman Bukari scored the 2-2 from an impossible angle just before the end.

Barcelona wint

FC Barcelona – without the injured Frenkie de Jong – experienced a major setback in group H when they visited FC Porto with the injury of top striker Robert Lewandowski in the first half. Still, the Catalans could laugh when his replacement Ferran Torres scored the opening goal just before half-time.

Despite many attempts by Porto, it remained that way in Portugal: 0-1.

In the same group, Shakhtar Donetsk turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 victory earlier tonight in a Dutch meeting between trainers Patrick van Leeuwen and Mark van Bommel.
