Nick Kyrgios Aims for Comeback at Australian Open After Injury Setbacks

At the beginning of October, the 28-year-old was still ranked 470th in the world rankings. However, Kyrgios still holds 21st place in the so-called “Protected Ranking”.

This is intended to give injured players who have been missing for more than six months the chance to take part in tournaments at ATP level again, regardless of wildcards and qualifications.

The position in the “Protected Ranking” is usually calculated from an average value of the first three months of the injury.

The knee injury required surgery in January 2023. From the summer onwards, Kyrgios was sidelined by a wrist injury. That’s why the Australian missed Wimbledon and the US Open. After an extremely successful year in 2022, in which Kyrgios played his first Grand Slam final against Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon, he experienced a setback this season.

The former top 20 player wants to be there again at the Australian Open next January, his home Grand Slam. This was recently announced by tournament director Craig Tiley.
