After becoming a millionaire thanks to his performance on the playing field, Patrick Mahomes, quarterback de los Kansas City Chiefs, is now pursuing investments off the field, but within the sporting world. That model could become the way forward for other athletes as well.

The Chiefs quarterback has taken over several teams in the Kansas City area, at least as a minority partner, but the spectrum of sports in which he has been present is growing more and more. With an elite salary, in which he would receive more than 210 million dollars in the next four years, and 500 million in total, plus what he achieves through sponsorships, it is not unreasonable to think that he will eventually achieve his final goal: take over an NFL franchise.

Patrick’s investments

At 28 years old, Mahomes It already partially owns the Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball (MLB), Sporting Kansas City of Major League Soccer (MLS) and the Kansas City Current of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), all in the city of his NFL team.

He is also the owner of a Major League Pickleball franchise and, in his most recent adventure, he is part of a group of athletes that will invest more than 200 million euros in the Alpine Formula 1 team. Also in this group is his teammate, Travis Kelce (current partner of singer Taylor Swift)as well as boxer Anthony Joshua, golfer Rory McIlroy and footballers Trent Alexander-Arnold and Juan Mata.

Outside of the sports world, it is important to mention that the Chiefs quarterback He is also an investor and in some cases brand ambassador in Whataburger (fast food chain), AirShare (private jet company), Hyperice (maker of muscle recovery technology) and Whoop (physical monitoring technology).

Mahomes’ case is special

The case of the Most Valuable Player of the last Super Bowl is unique, and not because he owns other teams. Notably, David Beckham (Inter Miami), sisters Venus and Serena Williams (Miami Dolphins), Marshawn Lynch (Seattle Kraken), LeBron James (Liverpool FC) and Michael Jordan (Charlotte Hornets) are an example of athletes who became owners.

But none has done it with so many franchises, nor so young. In fact, most have joined their teams after retiring, or at least close to hanging up their tennis shoes. Not only is Mahomes still active, but he may not even be halfway through his career. Additionally, he owns virtually all of KC’s professional teams, something no other athlete has achieved, as they tend to focus on just one franchise.

Brady, an example to follow

For Mahomes, the ultimate goal is to one day own an NFL team, even partially. In that regard, he has said that he wants to follow in the footsteps of another quarterback: Tom Brady, who is in the process of acquiring a stake in the Las Vegas Raiders.

“I think Tom is trying right now, but that’s definitely where you want to go because I love this sport and I want to give back some of what it has given me when I’m done playing,” the player mentioned.

Brady’s purchase with the Raiders has not been final, as it is still in process, but everything seems to indicate that he will soon be a minority owner of the black and silver. A report in July from Pro Football talk indicated that the NFL would have closed the door to active players acquiring part of their teams

In that same report it was mentioned that Aaron Rodgers, quarterback of the New York Jets, and Caleb Williams, possible first pick in the 2024 Draft, investigated with the League if that would be possible.
