Preparing for the Paris Olympic Games 2024: Gard Departmental Council and Municipalities Get Ready

The Paris Olympic Games (July 26-August 11, 2024) and Paralympic Games (August 28-September 8) will allow Gard to welcome several delegations. The Gard Departmental Council and the municipalities are preparing for it.

Less than 300 days before the opening of the Paris Olympic Games (July 26-August 11), Gard “Land of Games 2024” is preparing to welcome several delegations, including those for the Paralympics (August 28-September 8).

According to the Terre de Jeux 2024 website, six certified Gard preparation centers were chosen: the Raphaël Pujazon stadium, the Ghislain Amsellem sports hall in Alès (athletics, volleyball), the Port Camargue nautical center (sailing), the Assomption stadium in Nîmes (archery), the Adrien Hardy nautical base in Beaucaire (rowing, canoeing, line racing), the Uzès Boxing club (boxing), as well as the Espace Gard discoveries in Méjannes-le-Clap (road cycling, breaking, 3X3 basketball).

The majority of sites benefit from renovation work thanks, in particular, to support from the State, local authorities such as the Beaucair nautical base (inaugurated on Saturday October 14) or the Espace Gard discoveries in Méjannes-le- Clap where the Department has invested a lot.

The refurbished firing point

Even the Assomption stadium, the den of Nîmes archery, will be refurbished, as Olivier Grillat, sports director of the Nîmes Arc-club, points out: “The shooting range will be renovated. The international federation requests that there be an awning to permanently shoot. The interior of the premises is refurbished. The work is excellent.” The City participates in these subsidized projects.

To know the nationality of the archery delegations, however, you will have to wait: “The major nations in the discipline, like South Korea, are already established and will choose sites near Paris. But there are plenty of federations who will have one or two selected for the Olympics and will turn to Nîmes. We have our network”, smiles Olivier Grillat who is organizing with his club a stage of the Indoor World Cup at the start of 2024.

Patience

There should be Nîmes archers qualified for the Olympics who will also train on the shooting range at the Assomption stadium and perhaps an Ivorian athlete, already hosted in Nîmes, who will take part in the selections in Africa this fall. Clearly, for archery delegations, we will see things more clearly from May 2024.

Vincent Bouget, departmental advisor responsible for sports, confirms that we have to be patient: “We have certification on several sites so that means that we have fulfilled the specifications. Now, we have to bring people to Méjannes -le-Clap, work our network to attract delegations so that they can see the infrastructure with three-star accommodation, catering, create events.”

Basket 3X3

Thus, the French women’s 3X3 basketball team took part in a competition at Pont du Gard at the end of the summer after an internship in Méjannes-le-Clap. According to the Department, the delegation, delighted with the stay, could return provided they pass the qualifications for the Olympics next April. “Those who came to Méjannes found the welcome excellent!”

For cycling, Vincent Bouget wants to ride, at the beginning of February, the popular wave of the Étoile de Bessèges and its peloton in which there will be future runners competing in the Olympic road race: “A stage in Méjannes is planned. We We have planned for the preparation of cycling loops and there will be a national cycling center.” Something to seduce.

Gard can also welcome breakdancing delegations, a new Olympic discipline, and intends to rely, at the beginning of November, on the second edition of the international battle. It remains to be seen what the economic benefits will be for the department.
