Pressbaum Wins Lower Austria Derby in Bundesliga Season Opener

At the start of the new 2023/24 Bundesliga season, ASV Pressbaum welcomed the Badminton Mödling team in the Lower Austria derby on Saturday. Compared to the previous year, the Mödling team had three strong newcomers: Harshit Aggarwal (India), Ondřej Král (Czech Republic) and Serena Au Yeong (Feldkirch), while Jan Louda is no longer in the squad. In the first game, however, they traveled to Pressbaum weakened without their first two men in the singles, Aggarwal and Wraber. On the other hand, the Pressbaum team had to do without the doubles specialist Pawel Smilowski and Carina Meinke and the returnee Philip Birker was only able to play to a limited extent due to an acute illness. Since Philipp Drexler moved to the 2nd Bundesliga for the new season and Jan Janostik now plays in the Czech league, the Pressbaum team was supplemented by Lucie Cerna (Czech Republic) and Mark Korosa (Slovenia). “Due to this constellation, we expect an exciting game, but we hope for a narrow win in order to start the season successfully,” said ASV section leader Andreas Meinke before the game.

For the first game, Adi Pratama decided to play in the first men’s doubles with Iskandar Zulkarnain, whereas Mödling, somewhat surprisingly, fielded Dominik Stipsits and Christian Tomic. So the first men’s doubles match was quickly decided. Pratama/Zulkarnain gave the Mödlingers no chance in two sets with 21:4, 21:7 and, as expected, gave them a 1-0 lead. For the second men’s doubles, Pratama chose Philip Birker and Mark Korosa, who met Daniel Graßmück and Michael Tomic. When they first appeared together, the two Pressbaumers had some trouble getting into the game and Birker was also struggling with his illness. Nevertheless, an exciting game developed, in which in the end the Mödlingers narrowly had the upper hand with 21:19, 21:18 and thus ensured the 1:1 equalizer.

Due to the failure of Carina Meinke, Alzbeta Basova and Lucie Cerna competed for Pressbaum in the women’s doubles for the first time. On the Mödlinger side was the newly formed pairing of Serena Au Yeong and Reka Sarosi, who played a strong game. And so the Mödlingers were able to use their continuous lead in the first set with 21:18 to win the set. But then Basova/Cerna varied their game more and became increasingly successful in dominating the game with powerful attacks. As a result, they turned the game around and with 21:16, 21:13 they managed a three-set win to give Pressbaum a new 2-1 lead.

The first men’s singles was a clear affair on paper. Zulkarnain met Michael Tomic from Mödling. And as expected, the Malaysian in Pressbaumer’s dress delivered a clear 2-set win (21:12, 21:15) and thus took the 3-1 lead. In the subsequent second men’s singles, Pratama sent new signing Mark Korosa onto the field, while Ondřej Král competed for Mödling. Korosa was able to convince a few times in the two sets with nice rallies, but in the end he was defeated by the experienced Czech. The 2-set defeat (17:21, 12:21) meant the guests were back at 3-2.

Pressbaum wins the Lower Austria derby at the start of the season. The title defender from Pressbaum celebrated a 5-3 victory over Mödling at the start of the 2023/24 Bundesliga season.

In the women’s singles, Lucie Cerna was able to show her talent for Pressbaum for the first time. Katrin Neudolt stood opposite her. In the first set, Cerna controlled the game from the start and set the stage for victory with a score of 21:16. In the second set, the Mödlinger gave up the game when the score was 7:1 for the Pressbaumer due to an injury and so the Pressbaumer’s 2-point lead was restored to 4:2. For the third men’s singles, Armin Sarosi, who plays for Pressbaum, met his clubmate Christian Tomic. Armin started the first set a bit nervous and had to lose the set 16:21. In the second set he improved significantly and with 21:17 he forced a third set. After a botched start, he was already 2:11 behind, but was able to fight back a bit, but the defeat of 15:21 could no longer be avoided. Mödling thus shortened the score once again to 4:3.

In mixed doubles, Adi Pratama decided to play together with Alzbeta Basova to compete against the new Mödling mixed doubles Ondřej Král/Serena Au Yeong. In order to win the opening game, the mixed doubles had to be won, and Adi and Alzbeta were accordingly motivated. With a convincing performance, they were consistently superior to the Mödlingers and secured a clear 2-set win with 21:17, 21:12. This secured the 5-3 victory and marked the start of the new Bundesliga season.

“As both teams were unable to compete with their best players, we are very happy with the 5-3 win. Our young up-and-coming players were also able to prove their talent and will certainly bring us a lot of joy,” explained section leader Andreas Meinke. Next up is a double round. On October 28th, ASV Pressbaum will welcome the record champions from Traun and on October 29th, the ASV Pressbaum team will be guests in Linz.
