Proposal Revealed: Five New Sports Up for Consideration at Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028

The proposal arrived today from the LA28 Organizing Committee: five new sports possible for the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028.

We are talking about baseball-softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse e squash: the proposal has been made and now the ball will pass to the IOC Olympic Program Commission and then to the IOC Executive Committee. It will be discussed shortly: in the 141st IOC Session in Mumbai, India, from Monday 15 October.

Of these five sports, three have already been seen at the Games: baseball and softball from 1992 to 2008 and then for 2020, while cricket was present in 1900 and lacrosse in 1904-1908. An absolute novelty would be for squash and flag football (something comparable to American football).

Looking from the Italian side, discreet news would be the inclusion of softball, with the Italian national team performing. The baseball question needs to be understood, while in flag football the Azzurri boast silver at the World Games in 2022.

Casey Wasserman’s comment: “The sports featured spark imaginations on the playing field and foster culture off it. They are relevant, innovative and community-based. They will bring new athletes to the Games, engage diverse fans and expand the Games’ presence in digital spaces, further amplifying LA28’s mission to deliver an unparalleled experience.”
