Puerto Rico Basketball Federation Applies to Host FIBA 2024 Olympic Playoffs

The Puerto Rico Basketball Federation (FBPUR) announced on Monday that it completed the application process to host one of the four tournaments of the FIBA 2024 Olympic playoffs for men’s basketball.

Whichever island is selected, the event would be held from July 2 to 7 of next year, at the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum of Puerto Rico.

“We present all the documents and make the initial deposit required to be able to submit the application. Now the decision is in the hands of the FIBA board of directors, and we hope to have a response at the end of November,” said FBPUR president Yum Ramos in written statements.

Although the FBPUR did not specify in its statement the amount of the deposit submitted, this newspaper learned that FIBA demands a payment of $2 million for a country to host one of the playoffs. At the time of applying for the venue, the FBPUR paid only a fraction of that money as a deposit, a sum that will be returned if not selected.

“It is an event that will bring international exposure and the return on investment is guaranteed. As usual, we hope to have the main support of the Government of Puerto Rico and that of private companies,” added Ramos, in reference to the financial support that will be needed to organize the tournament.

The last time Puerto Rico hosted a qualifying tournament for the Olympics was in 2003, when the Puerto Rican team qualified for Athens 2004 at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum. In fact, those Olympic Games marked the men’s team’s last appearance on that stage.

The road to Paris 2024, via repechage, will see 24 teams compete in four qualifying tournaments. Each tournament will host six teams for a total of nine matches to be played over six days. The winning team of each tournament will punch its ticket to the Olympic Games.

Since 2016, the FBPUR has hosted 10 FIBA events, including two AmeriCup and Centrobasket Femenino tournaments and qualifying windows for the Basketball World Cup, among others.

The qualifying windows that were staged this year in Puerto Rico were sold-out events and registered a total of 43,102 fans, making the island the number one venue in all of America and the third in the world.
