René van der Gijp is not happy with Gaston Ávila, he said on Friday evening in Today Inside. The analyst calls the Ajax defender ‘just a joke’.
“Where did Ávila play at Royal Antwerp?” Van der Gijp wonders out loud. “Did he ever play? Marc Degryse, Jan Boskamp and Jan Mulder (experts of Belgian football, ed.) all said that he really can’t do anything at all.”
“We also saw that on Thursday evening,” Hélène Hendriks responds. “We will see that in the next three years. That Argentinian is just a joke,” Van der Gijp concludes his argument about Ávila.
“When you see Ajax play, it’s really drunk,” the former footballer of SC Heerenveen and PSV continues. “They shoot the ball from one sixteen-meter area to the other, where Brian Brobbey is standing. He then loses the game and the ball ends up in a sea of space.”
Johan Derksen attributes the unfortunate performance of Ajax’s central duo to the language barrier at the back. “With such a peer, they all have to move forward to the center line, but there are two boys there who do not speak the Dutch language.”
Presenter Wilfred Genee, in turn, states that Maurice Steijn plays the same game as he did in his time as Sparta’s trainer. “We had Michiel Kramer at Veronica Offside on Monday and he said that he knew that Ajax was always going to give the long ball. Steijn played football with Sparta and is doing so again now.
“But there is no ideal playing style with these players,” Derksen responds to presenter Genee’s claim. Van der Gijp: “Ajax will be outplayed by AZ again on Sunday, I am convinced of that.”
