Reviving Badminton in Alcalá: An Interview with Club President José Ángel Montenegro

Renewed project to once again promote badminton in Alcalá la Real. From the Alcalá Badminton Club, its executive wants to recover and promote the practice of this sport in the municipality. To learn more about this specialty and what the new campaign offers us, we interviewed its president, José Ángel Montenegro.

What are the main developments for the season that is now beginning? Badminton in Alcalá appeared especially at the school level in the nineties approximately, at the hands of several SAFA teachers, among them Rafael Valverde, who is once again a fundamental piece in resuming it. I want to thank him from here, as well as Bernardo Jurado, whom I take this opportunity to thank for introducing me to this sport. There have been several attempts to revive this sport with several clubs, including Fran Ruiz’s Club Baruca and others, but it has not come to fruition over time for various reasons. This project aims to promote badminton again in Alcalá by attracting former players of our time and especially at the level of sports schools and colleges. For this we are relying on the Department of Sports.

Thus, one of the main novelties is to make this sport known to girls and boys, in schools with different recruitment campaigns and thus ensure this sport in our town. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank the Department of Sports for supporting us as much as possible by giving us El Silo for this. I am sure that when this project is consolidated, a more stable solution will be sought with other more suitable facilities.

What are the main attractions of badminton as a sport? Badminton is a very complete sport both physically and mentally, in which both strength and speed are worked on. As a curious and unknown fact, badminton is the fastest racket sport in the world, with shuttlecock hits of more than 408 km/h recorded. Furthermore, we must highlight the absence of violence, which does exist in other sports.

What competitions is the club participating in this season? At the level of competitions, we are preparing, together with other clubs in Jaén, a circuit in several locations such as Arjonilla, Castellar, Vilches, Villacarrillo and Alcalá la Real. It would be, for now, in base and veteran categories.

Our intention will also be to be able to organize several tournaments at a local level, for example at the fair, Christmas, which would be at a charity level or similar. It still needs to be shaped with the help of the Department of Sports. On the other hand, in the medium or long term a competition team of both children and veterans will be prepared and have federated players, but we must have our feet on the ground and first consolidate and give visibility to this sport again in Alcalá.

What is the profile of the people who practice this sport in Alcalá? They are people who learned about badminton in the 90s, and who want to take it up again, as well as people who are starting to get to know it through us.

How can those people who are interested in getting started in this sport contact the club? To contact the club you can do it through different ways such as. Through social networks (for example, on Facebook, Badminton Alcalá la Real). By phone and WhatsApp: 640 28 69 99 / 646893960. Via email: [email protected]. Or directly at El Silo, our training place, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 6 to 10 p.m., and in the Sports Pavilion. We invite all those who want to learn about this sport and practice it, as well as parents to come with their children and contact us.
