Rising Judo Star Mathilde Aurel Sets Sights on Olympic Glory

Before competing in these cadet world championships in Zagreb at the end of August, the young athlete, who joined the federal judo hopefuls pole in Poitiers a year ago, first distinguished herself at the French championships.

In her junior category (- 40 kg), the young girl won the national title ahead of other cadet girls a year older. “I came across girls who were taller than me. But, that’s still the case. So I adapted my judo,” says the champion.

Selected in the France group for the European Cups, the Lonsoise has been on the box 5 times. In the Czech Republic, in particular, she reached the semi-finals, but lost to the world number 1 and finally won the bronze medal.

At the European Championships in June in Portugal, she finished 5th, just like at the famous Worlds in Croatia. “After coming close to the final, an injury hampered her fight for 3rd place,” comments the club president.

In order to gain confidence, Mathilde Aurel is supported internationally by her London coach, Pierre Sanders.

Champion Temperament

Mathilde’s young career on the tatami began at the Bordes club. The little girl was 6 years old when her mother enrolled her there. When the family moved to Lons, two years later, she joined the Lons 64 Judo club, under the leadership of teachers Nicolas Dimech and then Pierre Sanders. “I was quite shy, nervous, active,” remembers Mathilde. Judo allowed me to channel myself and open up to others. In Lons, I made friends, I worked in a fun way.” And the first competitions arrived, and very quickly the first successes.

Mathilde Aurel and her coach from Lons, Pierre Sanders, who also follows her in international competitions, in agreement with the federal center.

“Very quickly, we realized her qualities, but above all her champion temperament,” her coaches make no secret.

“Since I was little, I have been a competitor,” admits the little champion. In the race, I wanted to be first. In board games, I couldn’t accept losing. With my sister, Marilou, I was always in competition.” According to her teacher Pierre Sanders, Mathilde “understands very quickly what we teach her. She doesn’t like being in pain, but gives it her all.” This is necessary to cope with the three and a half hours of judo per day that she does at the Poitiers pole.

Black belt at 15

Followed by a sports doctor, an osteopath, a mental trainer, a physiotherapist, young Mathilde is preparing to return to the European Cup rounds in October.

Pierre Sanders, one of his coaches, hands over his black belt to Mathilde Aurel, in the London dojo.

The tatami tiger only aims for one thing, the Holy Grail: an Olympic title. In the meantime, in mid-September, because she was of the minimum age required, young Aurel was awarded her black belt by her judo teacher in Lons, in front of an audience of judokas.

His young, but brilliant, sports career does not prevent him from performing academically. With a 19.7 average for the brevet (taken at the end of summer because she was at the European Championships during the June session), she has just entered high school, and aims to become a surgeon.
