Rugby World Cup: why did the Irish form an 8 in response to the All Blacks haka?

The Irish stood out by forming the number 8 during the New Zealanders’ haka before their quarter-final at the Stade de France this Saturday evening at the Stade de France. The Clover XV had already used this response against these same All Blacks, in 2016, to pay tribute to the Munster coach and former number 8 of the Clover XV Anthony Foley, who died a few days earlier.

A match that the Irish won (40-29), sealing the first victory against the New Zealanders in their history. This Saturday, Jonathan Sexton’s teammates perhaps wanted to evoke this sweet memory and make Foley their lucky charm during the haka, which was happily covered by the chants of the Irish public.
