San Francisco lost its undefeated record on the season and was left without two of its main offensive weapons against Cleveland

En route to their first loss of the season, the San Francisco 49ers lost two of their biggest stars.

Running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver Deebo Samuel were injured Sunday in a 19-17 loss to the Cleveland Browns, which ended the 49ers’ 15-game regular-season winning streak.

Christian McCaffrey scored on a 13-yard pass in the first quarter, extending his streak to 15 consecutive touchdown games. But the versatile player was unable to overcome an oblique injury in the second half. Deebo Samuel injured his shoulder sometime in the first half and did not return, leaving quarterback Brock Purdy without two of his most talented players.

49ers head coach Mike Shanahan had little to offer after injuries to Christian McCaffrey or Deebo Samuel. And he revealed that Christian McCaffrey has a rib problem.

Additionally, All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams left the Browns stadium wearing a protective boot after suffering a right ankle injury in the first half, which initially looked serious.

Without Christian McCaffrey or Deebo Samuel, the 49ers needed someone to pick up the slack, but no one did.

Four-time Pro Bowl tight end George Kittle only had one reception and the 49ers constantly found themselves in bad situations. San Francisco committed 12 penalties for a season-high 105 yards.

“It was just sloppy,” Kittle said of San Francisco’s performance. “At the end of the day, that’s not the 49ers’ game. We’ve been playing pretty clean. False start fouls, holding, hands in the face, whatever you want to call it. We put too much pressure on guys to make plays.”

Christian McCaffrey finished with 11 carries for 43 yards and three receptions for nine yards. He was not on the field in the first series after halftime, he stayed on the bench to stretch, before being checked in the medical tent.

He returned briefly the next time San Francisco had the ball, but left again and headed to the locker room before being ruled out for the rest of the game.

One of the most dangerous threats in the league, Deebo Samuel was injured in the first quarter. The 27-year-old receiver spent several minutes in the medical tent before heading to the locker room.

Deebo Samuel, who was involved in a fight before the game, had two carries for 11 yards. He had no receptions. He entered the game with 20 receptions for 302 yards and a touchdown, plus 84 rushing yards on 16 carries.

In 2021, Deebo Samuel recorded 77 receptions for 1,405 yards and six touchdowns, and also added 365 rushing yards with eight scores.
