San Romolo 2023 Awards: Honoring Outstanding Citizens in Sanremo

After this morning’s Mass at San Siro (HERE), in the afternoon the San Romolo 2023 awards and the honor of meritorious citizen were awarded at the Sanremo Casino Theatre. In the presence of Senator Gianni Berrino, the Mayor of Sanremo Alberto Biancheri, with many representatives of the City Council and Council, the prizes for the different sections were awarded.

The San Romolo Prize for social works was awarded to Dr. Giuseppe Ferrea, Head Doctor of the ‘Borea’ hospital, very involved in social work and in helping the weakest. The award for entrepreneurship went to Gian Maria Leto, administrative manager of several family businesses. The one for sport goes to Michele Luigi De Maria, Judo master and teacher to many young people from the city of flowers. For culture, the award goes to Lucinda Buja, teacher at the high schools of Ventimiglia, Sanremo and Nice.

Giuseppe Ferrea: born on 15 August 1952, graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Genoa in 1977, obtained the specialty in Infectious Diseases in 1980 and in Pediatrics in 1986. He worked in various areas of the University and at the Gaslini hospital of Genoa (1978/79); head of the Medicine department of the Catholic Missionary Hospital St. Jean de Dieu in Benin-Western Africa (1980/81); researcher at the Clinic of Infectious Diseases at the University of Genoa, worked at the Gaslini and San Martino hospitals in Genoa (1982/1997); Head of Infectious Diseases at Sanremo Hospital, he won two European research projects (1997/2017). Having retired from work, he collaborates with the Caritas listening center in Sanremo; with two partners he opened an agricultural company to create work for weak social groups (women victims of violence, poor unemployed, immigrants); in 2007 he was co-founder of Pigna Mon Amour, an association that deals with the redevelopment of the historic center of La Pigna in Sanremo.

Gian Maria Leto: born in Sanremo on 2 October 1987, graduated in Economics and Business Legislation from the Bocconi University of Milan in 2010, obtained a Master’s degree in Management of RSA from the LIUC Business School in 2013. Director – Administrative Manager of family business: ACAD srl-Sanremo; Sant’Anna-Imperia Centre; SECI Villa Speranza-Sanremo (2010/2018), is Founder and CEO of Prime Quality-Sanremo/Côte d’Azur/Milan (catering) since 2015; Founder and President Ostelzzz-Milan (hostels) since 2016; manager of La Caletta – Sanremo (beach club) since 2017, of Villa Nobel – Sanremo (historic villa, museum, events) since 2019 (through Prime Quality), of the Yacht Club Sanremo (catering) since 2023, creating important synergies and employment opportunities of qualified young people.

Michele Luigi De Maria: born in Sanremo on 2 March 1942, graduated as a surveyor, in 1972 he was hired by the Municipality of Sanremo. He began practicing sports in 1956, dedicating himself to boxing and the following year to Judo, attending a specialization course at the Centro Coni dell’Acqua Acetosa in Rome where he obtained his black belt. In 1972 he founded the “Busen Matuzia Center” in Sanremo without interrupting his specialization in Judo and Aikido and in 1982 he founded the “Dojo Byakko Tai Sanremo” school which is still active today and increased his commitment to young people in the gym built by the Municipality in former covered riding school of the Equestrian Field. In 2000 he was appointed National Teacher by the Italian Judo Federation. Today he wears the “White-Red Belt 7th Dan in Judo” and has over 50 years of passionate and selfless teaching to generations of young Sanremo male and female athletes, of the precious moral values ​​and sporting techniques of the arts martial arts of Judo and Aikido.

Lucinda Buja: born in Sanremo, graduated in Ancient Literature at the University of Turin. She is a teacher at the G. Rossi high school in Ventimiglia, at the GD Cassini high school in Sanremo, and at the International high school in Nice. She is the author of the theatrical adaptations, homage to Italo Calvino: “La luna di Palomar” (Sanremo Casino), “Visconte dimezzato” (DAMS-University of Genoa), “Invisible Cities” (Teatro Rossini of Imperia) as well as “La nina mala ” by Mario Vargas Llosa and “Dona Fior” by Jorge Amado. With DAMS actors you conceived and directed the public reading of texts by Ligurian authors (Biamonti, Sbarbaro, Montale). You have held conferences on topics of Italian, Greek, Latin literature, art history and for the Dante Alighieri Society of Bergamo comments on songs from the Divine Comedy in the three-year period 2016/18. You edited the anthology “Per Italo Calvino”, published in 1996 with the contribution and collaboration of the Municipality and the Civic Library of Sanremo.

Andrea De Pasquale, an internationally renowned scholar and director of the Ministry of Culture, will be awarded the honor of Meritorious Citizen: born in Sanremo on 20 November 1970, he graduated in 1993 in Classics at the University of Turin, graduated in Archiving, paleography and diplomacy at the State Archives of the same city, specialized librarian at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. He obtained his PhD in Book History at the École Pratique des Hautes Études (Sorbonne) in Paris. An employee since 1999 and therefore director of the Ministry of Culture since 2008, he was Director of the most important Italian library and archival institutions, in particular: the Palatina Library of Parma, the Braidense National Library of Milan, the National University Library of Turin, the National Central Archives of Rome and the Central State Archives. He is currently Director General of the Education, Research and Cultural Institutes Directorate of the Ministry of Culture. In this capacity he coordinates the activities of the Central Institute of Restoration, the Institute of Archive and Book Pathology, the Opificio delle Pietre Dure and the Central Institute for Graphics. An internationally renowned scholar, he has participated in numerous scientific conferences with papers and has published numerous volumes, essays and articles relating above all to the history of books, libraries and archives. Among the various projects completed, we recall in particular the recovery of Italo Calvino’s library and archive from the house in Rome and the reconstruction of the latter’s rooms, with the original furnishings and furniture, at the Central National Library of Rome .

The celebrations will continue tomorrow with the 10th San Romolo concert (homage to Ninetto Silvano) at the Workers’ Federation in via Corradi (5pm). Finally, on Saturday 28 October at the San Siro Co-Cathedral (6.15 pm) there will be a Mass in remembrance of the deceased members of the Sanremasca family.
