The duel between the two young Americans in the quarterfinals of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai delivered what the fans had hoped for. Until the end, Sebastian Korda and Ben Shelton offered the fans in the stands and those who watched via TV or stream a fantastic match. In the end, the slightly older Korda prevailed 6:7 (10), 6:2 and 7:6 (6).
In the semi-finals Korda will face Hubert Hurkacz on Saturday. The Pole was also able to defeat the surprise man Fabian Maroszan in three sets in the first match of the day.
Shelton catches up in the tiebreaker
The first set between Korda and Shelton was evenly matched until 5:5. Then Shelton got the first break, but couldn’t stay out. After some back and forth, it was the left-hander who won the first round with 12:10 in the tiebreak.
But Sebastian Korda was the better man from the beginning of the second act, and after winning the second set he quickly led with a break in the third set. Ben Shelton fought his way back – and still had to narrowly admit defeat after a playing time of 2:54 hours. After he went from 1:6 in the Tebreak to 6:6.
