Terence Atmane: A French Tennis Phenom Rises in China

He is experiencing a Chinese autumn that he will remember. After obtaining his first two Challenger titles in recent weeks, Terence Atmane tasted the joys of a victory on the big circuit on Thursday for the first time in his career at 21 years old. And he also did it in Masters 1000 after coming out of qualifying. The Boulonnais, 148th player in the world, defeated the Australian Jordan Thompson, 62nd in the ATP, in three sets (6-3, 3-6, 6-1) and a little over an hour and half of the game (1h24 precisely). He will challenge the Chilean Nicolas Jarry to continue his great adventure.

Terence Atmane’s success is all the more remarkable as the game seemed to slip through his fingers. While leading 6-3, 3-1, the Frenchman conceded five games in a row to see Thompson equalize at one set all. Worse: the dynamic threatened to swing definitively in favor of the Australian when at 1-1 in the last act, he obtained three consecutive break points at 0/40.

A champion reaction

But Atmane then had a champion reaction which says a lot about his character. He fired no less than three consecutive aces to ward off the danger and get back in front 2-1. He immediately asked for public support, which completely revived him. Completely regaining confidence, he chained winning forehands and well-felt backhand passing shots, while Thompson sank to the other side of the net. The Frenchman thus won the last five games and the third victory of his career in a Top 100. What more could you ask for?
