The Chaotic Reign of Fabio Grosso: Olympique Lyonnais in Disarray

In just a few weeks, Olympique Lyonnais became the laughing stock of Ligue 1. Already responsible for a worrying summer preparation under the orders of Laurent Blanc, Les Gones had a cataclysmic start to the season which led to the dismissal of the Cévennes technician . His replacement, Fabio Grosso, came with the label of savior. With conclusive experience in Serie B at the head of Frosinone, the former left defender, who spent time with Lyon between 2007 and 2009, was expected to restore the image of Les Gones. However, since their first match against Brest (1-0), the Lyonnais have suffered three losses and conceded a surreal draw at home against Lorient (3-3). This Sunday evening, the defeat against Clermont, direct competitor for maintenance, was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Now bottom of Ligue 1, the Gones have still not gleaned the slightest success and Fabio Grosso’s methods are struggling to convince.

In his show Rothen ignites on the airwaves of RMC, the former midfielder, Jérôme Rothen, returned to the embarrassing situation of OL. Better yet, he admitted to having collected juicy indiscretions that come straight from the Lyon locker room. According to the latter, the transalpine technician would be far from unanimous among his men who do not hesitate to criticize him dirty: “I tried to get people from the locker room, and I got them. I’m not going to say the names of course, because that could put them in difficulty, but Fabio Grosso is already in the hot seat. There is hardly a player left who can see it. There are experienced and very experienced players who even told me that he was perhaps one of the worst coaches they had. He alienated everyone. He tried to reframe some. Everyone talked about Cherki, but it’s not just Cherki. Rayan Cherki takes a lot from Fabio Grosso, more than the others, which is astonishing. But it shows in his actions, because he puts him on the bench, punishes him. Sunday he punished him again, but he wasn’t the only one.»

Grosso’s questionable management singled out

After these startling revelations, the former AS Monaco player did not stop there and took out the sulphate against the 2006 world champion. Sure that OL are heading straight into the wall with such a coach, he said more about the more than atypical way he had to prepare his men during the appropriate international break to work with the ball for a group that sorely lacks confidence on the field: “During the break, the players who did not go to the national team did two sessions per day with heavy physical work without the ball and interval training. The guys were rinsed before playing Clermont.»

And while all these heavy revelations regarding Fabio Grosso could have been enough, Rothen delivered the final blow by unpacking other indiscretions. Indeed, only a few hours before the match against Clermont, Grosso would have indicated to three players, including Nicolas Tagliafico, the way to their house, because he was not counting on them for this important meeting for maintenance: “behind there are incredible choices. Before the Clermont match on Sunday morning, he called an extended group. At noon he told three players that he didn’t need them. They were still 20 even though on the match sheet there are not as many. At 6 p.m., he told a world champion like Tagliafico to go home. You say one to Lepenant who didn’t ask anything to go home. Even experienced players didn’t even know what tactical scheme they were playing in this Sunday. Little did they know there were hybrid roles for everyone with guys who don’t even speak French.»
