The first such match in the Premier League in 28 years. The fans are furious Football

Matches played on December 26 are one of the traditions of the Premier League. The second day of Christmas, called Boxing Day in England, is not only a time for family meetings, but also, and perhaps above all, trips to matches together.

This is a tradition that has not been changed for many years, although previously it happened that matches were also played on other holiday days. The last time a Premier League match was played on Christmas Eve was in 1995.

On December 24, 1995, Leeds United defeated Manchester United 3-1 at home. The hosts took the lead in the 6th minute thanks to a goal by Gary McAllister. Although Andy Cole tied the score 23 minutes later, Leeds still went into the break with the lead thanks to Anthony Yeboah’s goal. Brian Deane scored the match in the 73rd minute.

There have been no Premier League games on Christmas Eve since then. The round played on December 26 became a tradition, and fans could spend the two previous holiday days in the comfort of home and in a family atmosphere.

Fans dissatisfied with the match on Christmas Eve

That will change this year. On Thursday, the Premier League confirmed that the Wolves-Chelsea match will be played on December 24 at 2:00 p.m. Polish time. This did not particularly please the visiting fans. London and Wolverhampton are over 200 km apart.

“It is unacceptable that the match has been postponed until Christmas Eve. This is putting obstacles in the way of many fans who willingly and often travel all over the country to follow their team,” wrote the Chelsea fans’ association in a special statement.

Fans from London also emphasized that they expect to meet with the Premier League authorities and discuss the set date. However, it is difficult to expect the league to change its decision. The Wolves-Chelsea match will be broadcast by Sky Sports.
