the new life after prison – Corriere.it

In Monte Carlo, the Dane Holger Rune tries out former prodigy Boris Becker as a super coach: if the German lives with his mother Aneke, the assault on Djokovic’s throne will begin

It’s not yet news (for the official announcement it would seem like a matter of hours), but it’s much more than a suggestion. From the eternal spring of Monte Carlo come the photos of Holger Rune, the youngest top 10 player who turned 20 at the end of April, on the court with an old acquaintance of world tennis, and of his native British prisons. Boris Becker himself, in negotiations to become the Dane’s super coach (mother Aneke permitting) and this posthumous crossing of destinies between young guns candidates, in the near future, to take Novak Djokovic’s place at the top of the rankings is interesting: in January last year, in fact, on the advice of the then coach Riccardo Piatti, Jannik Sinner began working with the German six-time Slam winner, destined to become his tutor in the delicate moment of the leap in quality.

Jannik was in Melbourne for the Australian Open, he would lose in the quarterfinals to Tsitsipas and upon returning to Europe he would end his collaboration with Piatti, initially putting himself in the hands of Simone Vagnozzi and in the second half (also) of Darren Cahill: the Sinner-Becker contacts had been informal, informative, intercontinental phone calls to understand if those two had an understanding of each other and could have worked together.

But the revolving doors of fate decided otherwise. Becker emerged from Sinner’s sliding door (together with Piatti) to enter, twenty-one months later, the living room with a Mediterranean view of Holger Rune, one of the thousand sports professionals living in the Principality. And there, on a fast court of the Country Club which hosts the first Master 1000 on clay in April, the first training sessions of the Dane took place, supervised by Bum Bum, the former German big boy capable of overturning the rules of Wimbledon by annexing the Championships at 17 years and 227 days, technical tutoring tests that are needed for Rune to understand whether Boris can live with his omnipresent mother and for Boris to understand how to influence the aggressive game of Holger, a potential precocious champion who, however, still makes many youthful mistakes and gives your opponent too many free points.

Debut in Stockholm?

And already at the ATP 250 in Stockholm, starting today with Sonego on the scoreboard (unfortunately not Berrettini, who was registered but then withdrew: his recovery from the sprained ankle in New York has not yet been completed), that Becker could make his appearance alongside Rune, number one seed, in the official role of super coach. It would be yet another life of Boris, someone who never missed anything. Tennis champion (in addition to the Slams in the farm there are three triumphs at the ATP Finals and two Davis Cups, in addition to the world number one), former coach of Novak Djokovic from 2013 to 2016, three children from two wives plus his illegitimate daughter Anna, had by the model Angela Ermakova following a fleeting meeting in a sushi bar in London, then recognized.

Long-time talent for the BBC, vegetarian on and off, aspiring suicide, fraudulent bankrupt declared by a London court: sentenced to 30 months in prison, half of which to be spent in prison. Boris Becker’s prisons have become a serialized story and a docu-film: from the death threats received from his cellmates, to depression, to rebirth. Today Bum Bum is ready to start again alongside one of the most interesting teenagers on the circuit (hoping that from the heights of his wisdom he will give some good advice to Holger on the back pain that has been afflicting him for months and is becoming chronic: the results speak for themselves ).
