“I am deeply saddened by the current situation. My sincere love and support goes out to my friends and family in Israel, with the hope that this nightmare ends soon.”
A seemingly innocent message from Thibaut Courtois about the war between Hamas and Israel is causing a lot of reaction on social media.
A lot, in fact.
There are now tens of thousands of comments under Courtois’s latest messages on Instagram and X, the former Twitter. The majority are Palestinian flags, many others target the goalkeeper with hate messages.
It should not be surprising that Courtois expresses his support for Israel. The Red Devil has been a couple with the Israeli Mishel Gerzig for several years, and last summer they tied the knot.
Courtois’ statements are extra sensitive due to the past of his club Real Madrid with Palestine, where it has been supporting charity work for years.
A few years ago, the Spanish top club also welcomed a Palestinian activist, who received an eight-month prison sentence in Israel for assaulting an Israeli soldier.
An Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesperson then called Real Madrid’s decision to host “this terrorist” “a shame”.
The Israeli ambassador to Spain also expressed his dissatisfaction via social media and called Tamimi’s welcome an indirect encouragement of aggression.
It should certainly be mentioned: Real Madrid also supported projects in Israel in the past.
