Tragedy on Shisha Pangma mountain: at least two climbers dead and two missing after an avalanche

This Saturday, a huge avalanche devastated the ascent route of the 8,027-meter Shisha Pangma mountain, located in Tibet, while several climbers were in the middle of climbing to the top.

At this time, two deaths have been confirmed: that of an American named Anna Gutu (a client of Nirmal Purja’s agency) and that of her guide, the well-known Sherpa Mingmar, whose bodies have been recovered.

Another American climber, Gina Marie, and her Sherpa guide, Tenjen Lama, are still missing. Tenjen Lama is the famous Sherpa of the Norwegian Kristin Harila who managed to climb 14 ‘eight thousand’ in 92 days a few months ago.

The two women, Anna Gutu and Gina Marie, were competing to be the first American woman to climb all 14 of the world’s highest peaks. According to witnesses, there have been two large avalanches when the clients and their Sherpas were ascending, to the height of 7,800 meters.

Several groups began the attack on the summit of Shisha Pangma last night, but due to bad weather some climbers turned around on the route to descend to the base camp, while others decided to continue.

China, after four years of prohibition, has this year allowed foreign climbers access to its two ‘eight-milers’, Shisha Pangma and Cho Oyu.

The rescue operation is underway. Mingma Gyalje Sherpa, better known as Mingma G, and several other climbers are trying to find the missing people.
