Uli Hoeneß Criticizes the AfD and Vows to Never Accept the Party

Uli Hoeneß is known for his strong opinions. But it’s not just in sport that the 71-year-old doesn’t mince his words.

FC Bayern’s supervisory board member Uli Hoeneß sharply criticized the AfD. In the Bavarian Radio program “Bayerisch – Bissig – Bunt” on Sunday, he said: “For me, the AfD doesn’t exist because it doesn’t contribute anything to this country.” Shortly before, the results of the Bavarian state elections had become known. The right-wing populist party is the third strongest force in the Free State behind the CSU and the Free Voters.

“There are reasons for that and in my opinion they lie primarily in Berlin. The government started well and then it just argued and achieved very little. You shouldn’t be surprised that those who didn’t do anything do, benefit from it,” said Hoeneß. He particularly targeted one party in the traffic light government: the Greens. The honorary president of the German football record champions described this as the AfD’s “best election assistant”.

“I will never accept this party”

When asked whether AfD voters could be members of FC Bayern, the 71-year-old said: “We live in a democracy and as long as the AfD is electable, anyone can do that. But I will never accept it (the party) as long as that I live.”

Eintracht Frankfurt’s President Peter Fischer said in an interview with the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” a few years ago: “It is not compatible with our statutes to vote for the AfD. (…) Nobody can be a member of this party elects in which there are racist and inhumane tendencies.”
