Umana Reyer must once again postpone the appointment with the first European victory of the season: as happened in the debut in London, the last quarter was also fatal against Paris Basketball, which left Taliercio victorious 75-81. The excellent performance of Tessitori (21 points, with 6/9 from 2, 2/3 from 3, 5 rebounds and 4 assists) and the double double from Simms (28+10 with 5/5 from beyond the arc) were not enough for the Orogranata team ).
Coach Spahija has to face the match with limited rotations due to the absences of Wiltjer and Janelidze, with Spissu on the bench only for the honor of signing due to the severe bruise to the right shoulder suffered at the end of the championship match in Pesaro, and things get even more complicated in the first quarter, given that O’Connell remained on the field for just 18″ due to the blow to his right foot when he fell after making a basket. In the quintet, with Tucker, Parks, Simms and Tessitori, captain De Nicolao starts, who, having surpassed Tonut, is now the second orogranata ever for appearances (331) behind Bramos.
The match begins at the high pace congenial to the French, but Umana Reyer proves to be at ease, being the first to extend to +4 (14-10 at 4′) driven in particular by Tessitori in an excellent evening and forcing the opponents first to 4 simultaneous changes and then to time out. From 20-14 in the 6th minute, taking advantage of some less than impeccable defensive closures and rebounding dominance (8-3 in the first quarter for the guests, with 4 offensive rebounds), Paris is ahead 22-24 at the first half despite the excellent percentages of Venetian shooting (5/8 from 2 and 3/6 from 3). The game changes completely in the second period, as Umana Reyer seals the defense and with the initial 9-0 it is 31-24 at 14’30”. Paris breaks the deadlock with what will remain until the 17th minute its only field goal and, after the third fouls in rapid succession by Brown and Parks which further reduce the rotation possibilities for coach Spahija, in the last minute it even goes ahead, before Tucker’s triple that sends the teams to the locker room at 41-40.
Between the two halves the protagonist is above all the former Simms, then on the axis between Tessitori (assist) and Parks (basket) a couple of great plays arrive which testify to the patience and excellent ability of offensive circulation of the orogranata. Characteristics which, combined with the great defensive intensity (highlights being a block by Parks on Hifi, the French’s main point of reference) allow Umana Reyer to reach +7 (59-52) at 28’30” and close the period on 60-56, despite the fourth fouls first by Parks and then by Brown. However, Kratzer is out for 5 personal infractions due to yet another offensive foul at the start of the last quarter: nevertheless, coach Spahija is forced to time out in the 31st minute, at 60-60, which however does not interrupt the guest’s inertia ( 60-64 at 32’30”), before Tucker unlocks the orogranata in the period. Paris is at the bonus after 3’30” and the recoveries and defensive intensity are worth the overtaking of Orogranata immediately after half the quarter (67-66). However, the French extended their lead to +6 (67-73) in the 38th minute and, despite trying not to give up, in particular with Simms, Umana Reyer was no longer able to get back beyond -3, then finished 75-81.
The orogranata will return to the field at Taliercio also in the next two matches: the championship match on Saturday against Cremona (8.30 pm) and the cup match against Hapoel on Tuesday 17th at 8 pm.
