Union Saint-Gilloise Fall Short on Liverpool’s Pitch: A Recap of the Europa League Match

Union Saint-Gilloise logically lost on Liverpool’s pitch (2-0) on Thursday during the second day of the Europa League. An error from Anthony Moris spoiled the Union’s first period, while Jota put an end to Brussels’ hopes at the end of the match.

The first period was, unsurprisingly, in favor of the Reds. At home and with their attacking trio Salah – Nunez – Jota, Liverpool directly put pressure on Union Saint-Gilloise and Anthony Moris. The latter also had to pull out all the stops in the 5th minute to intervene against the Pharaoh Mohamed Salah.

In the quarter of an hour, Nunezlittle used by Jurgen Klopp this season, missed… the unmissable. Perfectly served by Salah in the small rectangle, the tall (1.87m) Uruguayan striker completely missed to the delight of Moris.

We had to wait before seeing the Union at the forefront. Too impatient and clumsy on the counter, the Brussels residents created their first opportunity on a free kick via Nilsson who, with his eyes closed, placed his head next to the goalAlisson (27′).

The more the match progressed, the more comfortable the Union appeared. And yet, as the break was quickly approaching, Moris, impeccable until then, faltered with an innocuous strike fromAlexander Arnold. Surprised, the Brussels doorman released the leather in the feet of Gravenberchwho took the opportunity to plant their first rose in their new colors (1-0, 44′).

A mistake and a counterattack…

The hapless Moris then did what he could to redeem himself in the second half. He first won in front of Jota (52′), then prevented the Dutchman from scoring a double by diverting his curling shot for a corner (61′). Twenty minutes later, it was the goalkeeper’s left post that came to save the Unionists (80′).

Sensing the Reds were a little sleepy at the end of the match, the Union (timidly) pushed without managing to appear dangerous. Whom finally put an end to Brussels’ hopes in added time following a well-executed counterattack (2-0, 90+3′).

Too short, too timid, the Union lost at Anfield. After two days, the troopsAlexander Blessin are in 3rd place in Group E, behind Liverpool (6 points) and Toulouse (4 points).
