Vinicius Junior Discusses Racism in Football and Calls for Change

Real Madrid and Brazil striker Vinicius Junior enjoyed a long interview with France Football to talk about a serious subject that is very close to his heart.

The future of Kylian Mbappé, his intentions for the rest of his career… Interviewed by our colleagues from France FootballVinicius Junior did not avoid any issue, not even a subject for which the Brazilian striker from Real Madrid found himself, despite himself, at the center of the debates.

Targeted by racism on May 21, during the match of the 35th day of La Liga against Valencia FC at Mestalla, defended by Merengue coach Carlo Ancelotti who attacked the media, the Auriverde international 23-year-old once again banged his fist on the table, not without emotion.

“In the past, people suffered slavery”

“It happened a lot of times, and in Valencia in a blatant and big way. I felt a lot of sadness (…) It’s a really complex theme. In the past, people experienced slavery. I’m interested in it. I really hope these episodes don’t happen again. Not just with me, but with all the players, everyone… And especially the children.”

The White House star hears “continue to have an influence” to put a definitive end to this scourge which continues to plague the world of football. “My voice weighs. I can help. It doesn’t just concern football or only black people. If someone insults you in a way that hurts you, you have to fight against it. Until things change.”

Vinicius Junior deplores the powerlessness of the authorities, in particular the leaders of the Spanish championship. “They never did anything. I had already spoken with La Liga to say that this had to change. They didn’t listen to me. They listened to me from the moment the whole world started talking about Spain. That made them react.”
