The Windsor St. Clair College men’s baseball team put the exclamation point on their 2023 season by winning their third straight provincial gold medal at the OCAA Championships hosted by Seneca College on Saturday at Stewart Burnett Park in Aurora. The Saints’ Friday game against Durham College (Oshawa) was postponed to Saturday morning due to rain, and the Saints defeated the tournament’s No. 2 seed with a 7-2 record and a 12-2 victory. The score beat Humber College (Etobicoke) to take home the championship.
In Durham’s win, the Saints took control of the game early by scoring one run in the first inning but giving up three more in the second. Another single in the third and a pair in the fifth put the game out of reach. Durham scored two runs in the seventh, but four Lords turnovers cost them the loss. St. Clair starting pitcher Sam McKinley (Tilbury, Ont.) was named player of the game after pitching six innings, allowing just one earned run on six hits and four runs. scored but struck out six batters. Hunter Appleyard (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas, Villanova) provided the Saints’ offensive punch with a triple and a single and drove in four runs.
Catcher Henry Real (Panama City, Panama) was named the Saints’ best player after driving in three runs with a triple and a double while also driving in three runs.
McKinley was named to the championship all-star team along with Mitch McCosh (Bear River, Ont./Bear River). Appleyard led the Saints with a .545 average and 10 RBIs, earning his second consecutive championship MVP award.
St. Clair’s gold medal marks OCAA baseball’s eighth championship in just ten years.
