2023 Liga MX Play-In: Which Clubs Will Secure the Final Liguilla Spots?

Liga MX still has two spots available for the Liguilla. Although there are already six classified for the Final Phase of the Apertura 2023, four clubs are pinning their hopes on the renewed Repechage called Play-In, which will be played next week.

Which clubs will play in the 2023 Play-In?

Unlike the Repechage format with which it was played until before this semester, in which four clubs advanced directly to the Liguilla and the next eight were eliminated in round-trip matches for the four remaining places, the new Play-In of Liga MX has only four participants.

Liga MX Play-In Format; this is how it is played

We are going to explain to you step by step how the Apertura 2023 Play-In is played, which is a system copied from the National Basketball Association (NBA) introduced in the burst sport for the 2020-2021 Season and which arrived in the MX League this semester .

Four participating clubs fighting for the two remaining spots in the Liguilla. Three games in total will be played to determine the two qualifiers. The participating teams are those that finished 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th in the Regular Phase. Each duel will be local to the team that has been best positioned in the table after 17 days. The tiebreaker after 90 minutes will be a penalty shootout; No other factor will have an impact in the event of a hypothetical tie between the clubs.

Play-In Matches; Who advances to Liguilla?

Match 1 | They play 7th vs 8th | The winner of this single match advances to the Liguilla as the 7th classified. Match 2 | They play 9th vs 10th | The winner of this single match enters a second game and the loser is eliminated. Match 3 | The Loser of Match 1 vs Winner of Match 2 plays | The winner of this single match advances to the Liguilla as the 8th ranked team.

Dates for Play-In matches

According to the official Liga MX calendar, Match 1 and Match 2 of this phase have tentative dates of Wednesday, November 22 or Thursday, November 23, while Match 3 would be played on Saturday, November 25 or Sunday, November 26. The following week the Apertura 2023 Liguilla will start with the eight surviving clubs.
