After Dortmund game: Gladbach fan critically injured

After the Bundesliga game between Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach, there was an attempted attack by around 100 to 200 masked people on departing away fans near the stadium on Saturday. Previously, a Gladbach supporter was critically injured by a suspected BVB fan.

The Dortmund police and public prosecutor’s office said in a joint statement that the masked people, some of whom were wearing face masks and quartz sand gloves, attacked Gladbach supporters accompanied by police forces after the game.

Officials were also attacked with punches, kicks and objects, including bottles. The police officers deployed remained uninjured and were able to separate the groups. The unknown attackers fled.

In addition, a 21-year-old Borussia Mönchengladbach fan suffered life-threatening injuries in a fight between two other groups from the opposing fan camps not far from the stadium. As the police announced, shortly afterwards they arrested a suspect of the same age who was believed to be part of the Dortmund fan camp. He had already appeared before the police. The police are looking for witnesses to the crime and a murder squad is investigating.

Borussia Dortmund won the home game against Mönchengladbach with 4-2 goals despite being 0-2 behind. BVB is in fourth place in the table, Gladbach is eleventh.
