Ajax may play without Brian Brobbey and Josip Sutalo in the home match against Vitesse on Saturday. The two are not completely fresh, says trainer John van ‘t Schip. Steven Berghuis and Steven Bergwijn are fit.

Brobbey resigned from the Dutch national team after the 2-2 loss against Almere City due to an unknown injury. According to Van ‘t Schip, Sutalo did not return completely fit from the international match with his country Croatia. On Saturday, Van ‘t Schip will decide whether they can both play.

The absence of Brobbey in particular would be a loss for Ajax. The striker is one of the few bright spots in Ajax’s catastrophic season. Brobbey scored five times and provided three assists in twelve league matches.

Berghuis and Bergwijn also withdrew from the Dutch team, but according to Van ‘t Schip they seem to be able to play against Vitesse. Silvano Vos and Ahmetcan Kaplan will participate with Jong Ajax against TOP Oss on Friday evening.

Gerónimo Rulli is fit enough to play goalkeeper again after being sidelined for three months with a shoulder injury. It seems likely that Rulli will start on the bench, because Van ‘t Schip thinks Diant Ramaj is “very good” at goalkeeping.

Van ‘t Schip wants to bring in an experienced player

Van ‘t Schip says he does not want to make many changes after the 2-2 against Almere. “We analyze, look and try to improve, but it is not the case that we rigorously do other things based on that. There are no players who have failed. The fact that you make mistakes is something else.”

During his press talk, Van ‘t Schip also discussed his wishes for the winter transfer market, which opens on January 1. It is an open secret that Ajax wants to strengthen itself after the disappointing first months of the season.

“We want some experience,” said Van ‘t Schip. “I don’t know whether it will work. He must not only be a good player, but also pass and be an added value to the group. Those types of players are not for the taking. We are looking at what is possible.”

Number twelve Ajax will meet the bottom of the Eredivisie with Vitesse. Edward Sturing is currently at the helm of the Arnhem team on an interim basis. The former club player recently succeeded Phillip Cocu, who resigned after the 1-3 home defeat against SC Heerenveen. In Amsterdam the ball rolls at 9 p.m.
