Alexander Weis Falls Short in Second Turkey Tournament, Looks to the Future

Alexander Weis is playing a second tournament in Turkey this week.

Every South Tyrolean tennis fan turned their attention to Turin last night to watch the final of the ATP Finals with Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic. But apart from that, another South Tyrol player was required in a final.

Alexander fought his way to the final of the $25,000 ITF tournament in Antalya, Turkey, over the last week. There the South Tyrolean lost in an exciting game lasting 2.39 hours against his competitor from Germany Tim Handel, who wrested the title from Weis with 3:6, 6:1 and 3:6. After the defeat in Muttenz, Switzerland, it was the 26-year-old’s second ITF final defeat of the year. Weis will have to wait for his fifth title in tournaments of this type.

He went into the final as number 4 seed (ATP 303) as a slight favorite after only having to give up seven games in the previous two rounds. But Handel (ATP 439) played a bit better on Sunday, was able to adapt better to the difficult conditions in Turkey and used his second match point to win the tournament.

Positive thinking despite defeat

“It’s a shame today, we almost couldn’t play because it was brutally windy. It was extreme and heavy today. I played well all week and felt good. He has adapted better to the conditions. I really struggled. It was still a good week. A final is always good. But there would have been more. I hope it will be like that again next week, or even better,” said Weis, who is taking part in an ITF tournament in Turkey this week.
